St. Martin Parish Public Officials have announced
the following information for individuals evacuating to Public Shelters
if you are evacuating with a dog or cat. Owners are responsible for
their household pets defined as domesticated cats and dogs only. For
those who have no transportation, the following shall apply.
Parish Pequirements For Acceptance Of Household Pet
Evacuation Are:
a. Pets must be current on their vaccinations and owners must have
proof of vaccinations.
b. Have a current photograph of the pet (with the owner, if
possible).
c. Pets must have a collar with an identification tag on it. The
ID Tag must have the owner's driver's license number, address and
telephone number on it. Each pet must have a leash to control the pet.
All dogs over 30 pounds must have a muzzle on at all times. All dogs
shall have muzzles available.
d. Each pet must be in a pet carrier. The carrier must have the
owner's name, address, telephone number, and the name of the pet on it.
Carriers must safely and securely confine pets and be specifically
designed for the containment and transport of such pets to utilize
public transportation during a disaster. The carrier must be large
enough for the animal to stand up and turn around in.
e. Each pet carrier must have food and water bowls. Each bowl
must have the pet's name, owners address and telephone number on it.
f. Each pet must have a two (2) weeks supply of food, water, and
any medications it needs. All these items shall be properly identified.
g. Only small animals in carriers will be transported on public
transportation from the pick-up points to the staging area provided it
does not present a health or safety issue to humans. All medium and/or
large pets must be brought directly to the staging area
h. Owners must accompany pets to the pick-up point and must bring
the pet to the truck which will bring the pet to the staging area.
i. Owners will be responsible for the feeding, watering, care,
etc of their pets once at a shelter.
