FROM KPEL-105.1 News: LAFAYETTE, La., June 24, 2009 – Due to extremely high temperatures over the last few days, Lafayette Utilities System (LUS), SLEMCO, Cleco and Entergy are currently experiencing a heavy demand for electricity which is causing constraints on the transmission lines serving the Acadiana region. Increased demand and system overload may require implementation of emergency controlled power outages to protect the transmission system from long-term damage.
 
LUS and SLEMCO are urging customers to conserve energy by reducing their energy usage. The most effective conservation measure customers can take is to raise the thermostat on their air conditioning unit or turn their unit off, if health permits. Also, residents can turn off household electrical appliances not required for medical purposes.
 
If controlled power outages become necessary, electric service will be interrupted for approximately 30 minutes in affected areas. LUS and SLEMCO will only take this step as a last resort to protect the system from damage and avoid a long-term, widespread power outage.
 
LUS and SLEMCO will do everything possible to inform local radio and television stations prior to declaring an emergency to help alert the public. Please listen to your local television and radio stations. You can also check the Web site of your power company.
 
The companies are working together on a daily basis to ensure the least number of customers are impacted if controlled power outages are needed.
 
LUS and SLEMCO will let the public know when this situation has stabilized.
 
Other tips to reduce power usage:
 
·         Customers who need air conditioning should set the thermostat at the highest comfortable temperature.
·         If possible, customers should use fans instead of air conditioners.
·         Don't use major appliances, such as electric dryers, ranges, washing machines and dehumidifiers -- if necessary, shift their use to night-time hours.
·         Close blinds, drapes and curtains during the heat of the day.
·         Turn off unnecessary lights and refrain from using computers.
